The second National Women in Project Management (WiPM) Conference, “Driving the Future” took place on 24th September 2015. This conference was important to both men and women who want to ensure they are getting the best for their organisation and want to learn from other peoples experience about the value diversity brings.

Full of stimulating talks and interactive debate, the conference was designed to facilitate knowledge-sharing and fresh insights for attendees.

The event offered, high profile keynote speakers, an interactive debate, targeted networking opportunities and a variety of CPD activities with the aim of reinforcing the importance of women in project management.

Harriet Minter: Harriet gives her opening keynote – “Proceed until apprehended”. Her talk focuses on what she has learnt from interviewing women at the top of their respective fields in the world of business.

Harriet is a regular speaker on women’s rights, the future of work and digital media. Harriet is the editor of the Guardian’s Women in Leadership section where she writes extensively on a variety of issues relating to women and the workplace and has interviewed a range of leading women from MPs to entrepreneurs and celebrities. Prior to her current role she worked as a commissioning editor for a range of sections on the Guardian and also ran the engagement and social media strategy for the Guardian’s Professional Networks.

Amanda Clack: Amanda’s talk is title “Driving the future: How enabling diversity can boost business”. Her talk focuses on her experience as a woman at the top of her field, and how diversifying your business can lead to better results.

Amanda is a Partner at EY where she is the Head of Infrastructure (Advisory), and is a founding member for the APM Women in Project Management Specific Interest Group, having held numerous roles in APM, and winning the SIG coordinators award in 1995. Amanda was also a Partner at PwC where she was Head of Profession for Programme and Project Management. Amanda led on two of the leading PwC global reports for PPM covering 3025 people in 110 countries. With 29 years of consulting experience she has led a number of high profile engagements including being a Mission Critical Programme Engagement Director for the Prime Ministers Special Delivery Unit.

Teri Okoro: Teri’s talk is titled, “Embracing diverse talent”. Teri analyses the progress made by women in the field of project management, the necessity for an organisation based around women in the profession and the future challenges of women in Project Management.

Teri Okoro is Chair of APM’s Women in Project Management SIG, founder and director of a construction design and project/programme consultancy, member of the construction industry council diversity panel and non-executive director, speaker and commentator on gender and diversity matters.

Dr Milena Kanova: Dr. Kanova’s talk focuses on her personal experiences in project Management, and how she values stepping out of her frame, embracing leadership opportunities and the journey a project enables, it is titled “Listen, Learn, Lead”.

Milena Kanov is the senior director of project management at Quintiles, where she works with the strategic and operational teams to put in place planning and implementation of strategies for clinical trials in all internal medicine areas, including rare diseases and genetic disorders, nephrology, dermatology, women’s and men’s health and others – in all phases of clinical development.

Haroona Irshad-Franklin: Haroona’s talk gives insight into her experiences in project management for the U.K government, and how she feels the key skills of listening, learning and leading can transform the way projects are undertaken. It is titled “Listening, Learning, Leading”.

Haroona is a programme delivery professional with over 11 years’ experience of running major programmes in Central Government.

She joined the Home Office in 2004 from a construction and project management consultancy and has led on a number of major programmes including Heathrow Terminal 5, the National Identity Scheme and the Border Systems Programme as well as setting up a new Government Counter Terrorism Agency. During her work at the Border Systems Programme, Haroona was the lead for automating the UK Border and her portfolio included the new e-Passport gates which have set the standard internationally for automated controls.

Michelle Van der duin: Michelle’s talk is titled “Listening, Learning and Leading in Mega Projects delivery”. She talks about how vital the ability to listen, learn and lead is within the Project management profession and how it has helped her projects succeed within the oil & gas industry.

With over 20 years experience in Project Management Michelle is responsible for leading numerous large projects around the world and the downstream project portfolio (the largest offshore facility ever built) for Europe, The Middle East and Africa on HSSE, Cost, Schedule and Quality through a team of project managers/engineers.

Tom Taylor, David Hillson, Harriet Minter & Susie Boyce: “The National Conference Debate” is hosted by Tom Taylor.

In this debate, hosted by Tom Taylor, the panelists discuss some of the biggest questions facing Women in business and work today. Tom Taylor is President of APM, Principal of dashdot and joint founder of Buro Four. He is an experienced project manager, consultant, advisor, lecturer, speaker, author and occasional broadcaster.

Dr. Hillson is an international risk management consultant who leads The Risk Doctor Partnership. A 25-year veteran who has worked in nearly 50 countries and published 11 major books and more than 100 journal papers and articles on risk. A notable figure in business risk management, and the recipient of numerous awards for his work over the years including the PMI Fellow Award (2010), the PMI Distinguished Contribution Award (2002), the PMI Eric Jennet Project Management Excellence Award (2011), and the PMI David I Cleland Project Management Literature Award (2013).

Paul Tunnah, Jane Mackenzie-Lawrie & Elizabeth Harrin: “How to develop your own talent”.

The panel debates on the importance of marketing and networking for a business, both online and offline and at any level.

Paul founded Pharmaphorum Media in 2009, to drive better communication and collaboration between the pharmaceutical industry and other healthcare stakeholders.

Jane has worked on top accounts in multiple categories – all B2B and service sector focused, including BMW, BT, American Express, Nationwide, Reed Employment and the ethical pharmaceutical sector on GSK, Pfizer and Roche when a pharma agency wanted to bring insight from outside the pharma world to its campaigns.

Elizabeth Harrin MA, FAPM, MBCS, is Head of Applications and Projects at Spire Healthcare and Director of Otobos Consultants Ltd, a project management consultancy practice.She is an award-winning project management blogger who writes the blog A Girl’s Guide to Project Management. She is also the author of the books Social Media for Project Managers, Customer-Centric Project Management and Shortcuts to Success: Project Management in the Real World.

Patty Everitt & Susanne Haselgrove: “Piecing together a “Me” shaped development plan”.

Patricia and Susanne focus on the benefits of a project manager injecting their own values into the role and how it helps enhance the project.

Susanne’s leadership career enabled her to promote widening participation, flexible learning and partnerships with employers to enable individuals to enhance their professional and personal development. Since 1998 Susanne has supported individual and team development in a variety of settings in public, private and third sector organisations including through the use of behavioural and psychometric tools.

Patty is a practising psychotherapist, who has also enjoyed a 30 year career as a physicist, software engineer, quality manager and IT project manager within a diverse range of organisations including SMEs and multi-national corporations, across the nuclear, scientific and pharmaceutical sectors. Alongside this very ordered and orderly path Patty developed a deep and abiding desire to notice what drives each of us to succeed, or not, in our ambitions. This path has taken her, via coaching, into psychotherapy.

The Project Controls Expo 2015 is the largest Project Controls event of its kind, bringing together delegates from all over the globe with the intention of doing the unthinkable, sharing their collective knowledge, tools, practices and  processes. Taking place on October 13th 2015, the Project Controls Expo 2015 was held at the mighty Emirates Stadium in the west stand. Transforming the stadium commonly known as a place for sporting excellence into a vibrant venue for business excellence is no small feat. However with the inclusion of a partner showcase room, a job fair, a zone dedicated to offering master classes in business practices, a workshop zone in which delegates can discuss project controls, a technology zone where the latest software and products used in project controls were on display, a zone dedicated to the intermediates of project controls where they live-streamed a basic overview of project controls in business and a zone for panels where delegates could share their experiences and ideas, the Emirates Stadium lived up to its reputation as a world class venue.

Steven Norris – Steven’s talk is the keynote and opening talk of the conference. He talks about the history of infrastructure and how the United Kingdom still relies on infrastructure developed in the nineteenth century. Going through his personal experience working in Infrastructure, Steven goes through the issues that developing infrastructure undergoes, from political challenges to the obstacles in the field. His keynote speech from the Project Controls Expo 2015 is now available for viewing on The PM Channel.

Steve has combined a career in politics with a business career in the fields of property, infrastructure and transportation. He is currently Chairman of BNP Paribas Real Estate UK and of Soho Estates. Having a particular interest in infrastructure he chairs the National Infrastructure Planning Association which works with government to improve the planning regime around major projects and advises a number of clients on major schemes.

Preet Bullar & Tony Purpuri – Preet and Tony gave a talk entitled “Challenges of tracking EV progress on the Army’s highest priority equipment programme – SV Scout” in which they spoke about the challenges they had faced and overcome in their many years working with defense programmes. Their talk from the Project Controls Expo 2015 can now be found on The PM Channel.

Preet is an Engineer and Program Management Consultant, with over 12 years experience supporting the Ministry of Defense. He is currently the EVM Lead on what is the Army’s highest priority new equipment programme, a multi-billion pound Armoured Vehicles Programme.

Tony is a Chartered Engineer and a Certified Cost Estimator with experience in the defense air and sea domains. He is currently responsible for estimating the cost of one of the largest and most complex defense programmes.

 

20151107105747_thumbDavid Bordoli and Helen Bentley – David and Helen presented a talk entitled “Scream if you want to go faster” which was a Masterclass based on a role play scenario looking at key practical aspects i.e. Contractual and legal, planning and programming, quantum and project management, and a project controls dashboard. David has over 35 years experience in the construction industry, and in 2014 co-authored ‘A Handbook for Construction Planning and Scheduling’. David is currently involved in a major infrastructure arbitration in South Africa.

Helen is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 25 years’ experience spanning a broad range of building and civil engineering projects. Today Helen continues to advise on many standard forms of contract including NEC, ICE and JCT.

 

20151107113608_thumbWill Bentley – Will conducted a talk entitled “Pragmatic approach to EV” in which Will addressed some of the key drivers for the HS2 Programme such as why HS2 is so important to re-balance and build a sustainable economy, as well as being a catalyst for economic growth for Britain. Will is the Program Control Director for HS2 Ltd, and has extensive experience working on many large infrastructure programmes in the UK and abroad including West Coast Route Modernisation, Qatar National Vision, Dubai Metro, North Sea projects and the Channel Tunnel.

 

20151107115023_thumbIan Heaphy – Ian gave a talk entitled “Marking Target Cost Contracts Work Under the NEC3” in which he explained how target cost contracts under NEC3 are intended to work and how they can, if well set up, deliver value for money. The talk also considered the problems parties who do not adequately understand those aspects of the contractual processes which determine a project’s success or failure; may face and how to mitigate these dangers. Ian is currently a Director in Turner & Townsends Contract Services Team, with over 20 years’ experience across the industry, including oil & gas, water, aviation, rail, highways, building and ports.

 

20151107115906_thumbJon Broome – Jon’s talk entitled “NEC3 compensation events: agreeing contractual change promptly, amicably and constructively” which presented a process that allows the parties to not just agree commercial settlements as the contract progresses, but to arrive at an agreed final account on contract completion, and also manage change events better so that the employer pays less and the contractor makes more money. Dr Jon Broome PhD, MAPM, MIoD is a director of BuiltIntelligence, chair of the Association for Project Management’s Contracts & Procurement SIG, and a recognised NEC3 contract expert. With over 20+ years experience in the development field, Jon has authored academic papers and articles, and two books on NEC3, and he co-authored the BuiltIntelligence on-line NEC3 e-Learning Academy.

Franco has over 42 years of experience in project planning & control which has given him experience working with Engineers, Consultants, Contractors and as a Client’s Representative.

 

20151108101535_thumbJohn Hollmann –  John spoke on the subject of “Reliable Risk Quantification for Project Cost and Schedule” in which he talks about the reality of cost estimate inaccuracy, failed cost/schedule risk analysis, and research on successful methods. This is followed by the demonstration of practical, reliable cost and scheduled risk quantification methods that anyone can apply without reliance on complex software and consultants. John has 35 years of experience, including all practice areas of cost engineering and project control including empirically-based risk quantification, and uses his experience to help owner companies improve their Cost Engineering capabilities.

 

20151108011433_thumbEwen Maclean & William Godwin – Ewen and William present a workshop entitled “Delay Claims and Analysis based on FIDIC Forms of Contract” in which they provide a general introduction to FIDIC claims covering what type of claims contractors typically make under FIDIC distinguishing between the recovery of time and money under different provisions of the FIDIC forms. Ewen is an experienced expert in the field of programming; delay and disruption; and associated prolongation costs in relation to construction and engineering projects. His experience has lead him to work on contracts that span, inter alia, major building, civil engineering, oil and gas, airports, tunneling, mechanical and electrical, pharmaceutical, infrastructure including highways and rail as well as fit-out works.

William is a practicing Barrister with over 20 years experience in construction law. He is an arbitration panel member of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, the Shanghai International Arbitration Center and the Dubai International Arbitration Center; he is also an accredited adjudicator of the English Technology and Construction Bar Association.

APMP – What’s it all about?

So, what is APMP really all about?

Is this you when you hear the acronym APMP? If so, keep on reading to find out what it’s all about!

 The formal definition on the APM website is:

‘APMP is the flagship qualification of the Association for Project Management. Tens of thousands of project managers have chosen to obtain the internationally recognised International Project Management Association Level D certification’. 

Still confused? Here’s a much simpler one:

APMP is aimed at those wishing to achieve an extensive level of project management knowledge, sufficient to incorporate into projects from individual assignments through to large capital projects. Installing transferable skills form one job to to another. Applicants typically have some pre-existing project management knowledge, although it is not essential.

APMP allows individuals to demonstrate their knowledge of all the components that come under project management. The APMP also allows for individuals to show their understanding of how these components then interact together and how any future projects they undertake can fit into their strategic and commercial environment.  The APMP is both a nationally and internationally recognised qualification. As it is such a diverse qualification, it can be carried from one job to another – and even more so, from one industry to another.

So hopefully now, when someone asks you about APMP, you should look more like this

Zero to APM Introductory Certificate (IC): A Graduate’s entry into the world of Project Management

Last Wednesday I started my first graduate job, Thursday morning I was back in the classroom. I was sitting in a conference room in Reading with 5 other ‘students’ waiting to begin the APM Introductory Certificate.

As it was one of Provek’s public training courses we were all from a variety of different backgrounds and companies. We ranged from the lone, lowly graduate with zero experience to a Gatwick engineer who had been managing projects for years.

Thankfully Nathalie, our trainer, was great at pitching the material at my level (the lowest level) but progressing quickly to challenge those who were picking it up quicker. So when I asked what a Gantt chart was it didn’t take her too long to recover!

The APM IC covers a lot of ground, it is a lot to absorb in two days, but the structure allowed for frequent repetition of older information. Each of the units logically builds on and expands previous modules meaning that whilst you progress you are naturally revising previous modules.

Provek’s method of teaching was very hands on, we were dragged out of our seats for activities at frequent intervals and whilst we complained a lot about the movement it was extremely helpful for our understanding of the units. Often the activities helped us grow in confidence or revealed areas we needed to return to, usually to our collective dismay!

Nathalie’s depth and breadth of experience helped her give us relevant and helpful real world examples as well as take the information she was giving us that one step beyond the theoretical to help us apply it when we were back in the work place.

One area I had a slight advantage was how recently I had done exams, many of the other delegates hadn’t done them in a while. My most recent exam experience however, wasn’t particularly helpful. As an English Graduate I haven’t done an exam with a definite right answer in a while, no long-winded explanations of my reasoning in this exam!

The exam was thankfully quite simple, 60 multiple choice questions, it didn’t stop the frantic highlighting and rereading during our final pre-exam minutes but it did make the actual exam far less stressful than I was expecting.

The questions are designed to thoroughly explore your understanding of the intricacies of the terms used and sometimes the difference between two answers was tiny until you (hopefully) remembered an important distinction.

After an hour it was all over, we were outside going over the questions we had struggled with and waving goodbye to the invigilator and his home décor magazines.

A week later I’ve passed and whilst they assure me now that if I hadn’t passed I would still have a job – I’m not so sure!

It was a brilliant experience, the training was of a high standard and I am very happy to now be in possession of my very own professional qualification, bring on APMP!
