The eVa20: Putting down the roots for good governance took place on 15th June at The Armourer’s Hall in Moorgate, London. An impressive venue, the conference was held over two days and was extremely informative and engaging.

The conference was focused on the subject of earned value management, with an earned value management masterclass available all day with Steve Wake – “someone who knows his stuff”.

Sir John Bourn: Sir John gives his opening key note – “Magna Carta and Project Management”. Sir John, KCB is a former Comptroller and Auditor of the United Kingdom. John is an Honorary Fellow of the London School of Economics and and Senior Advisor to the Foundation for Governance Research and Education. [FGRE] A Charitable Trust dedicated to thought leadership and best practice in governance.

Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence: Tim addresses the eVa20 conference on how to improve the initiation and delivery of major projects. Sir Tim is a retired British naval officer and chair of the MPA (Major projects association).

Peter Morris: Peter argues that “value is what projects should be creating for their sponsors. Earning is getting properly rewarded for doing so. Analysis is trying to think this through”.

Peter Morris is Professor of Construction and Project Management at UCL (University College London). Peter has also been in the forefront of developing richer, enlarged views of what disciplines should be doing for many years.

Tim Banfield: Tim’s talk is titled “Growing project delivery capability in government”. Tim is Director of strategy at the MPA (Major projects authority). He has a critical leadership role in developing the project delivery profession in government, including the development and advancement of the major projects leadership academy. an ideal speaker for this talk!

David Bennett: David presents his case study from completion of 12 months as project director for the Red Line of the Doha metro. He is Vice President of PMCM and Rail Industry and Jacobs Engineering leading programme and construction management business.

Stephen Carver: Stephen looks at some of the key anniversaries that we are celebrating in 2015 and links them back historically into key aspects of projects. He is a sought after speaker with a unique story-telling style and demonstrates how to help ourselves and develop our own skills. With much of his working life being spent in real business, his attitude is “if you haven’t done it – you shouldn’t be teaching it”.

Merron Simpson: Merron’s talk is titled “Validating strategies…a Magna Carta for the 21st century?” She gives an insight into linked projects and results to uses, and benefits.

Merron is founding director of New Realities Limited and is the UK’s Lead on open strategies and a certified facilitator/practitioner. Merron uses open strategies with organisations to improve their strategic planning, undertake service review and demonstrate their social impact.

Louise Hardy: Louise’s talk is about organisation, culture and diversity – how do these critical people related aspects shape and influence the delivery of projects and programmes? Louise explores the range of issues presented by ‘OCD’ for influencing projects and business and how these impact upon successful outcomes.

Louise Hardy, BSc CEng FICE CMgr FCMI is a programme manager whose most notable role was as infrastructure director for the delivery partner to the ODA for the design and construction of the Olympic Games.

Dr Hakur Jonasson & Dr Helgi Ingasson: This presentation details some core concepts of project ethics, and the basic idea behind the Project Ethics Tool (PET) is explained. This talk also includes a brief overview of creation of the IPMA code of ethics.

Dr. Haukur Jonasson heads the MPM (Master in Project Management) programme at the University of Reykjavik, Iceland. Dr. Helgi Ingasson is the professor at the school of science and engineering at the same university.

Elizabeth Harrin: Elizabeth explains imposter syndrome and how it is a convenient label for the self doubt we feel from time to time. Elizabeth shares her personal battle with imposter syndrome and explains how to identify it, overcome it and offers practical ideas to help you become more confident.

Elizabeth Harrin, MA, FAPM, MBCS, is director of Otobus consultants Ltd. She is a PRINCE2, MSP and P30 practitioner and holds the ITIL foundation certificate, she is also the award-winning blogger behind ‘A Girls Guide to Project Management’  aimed at helping project managers communicate more effectively.

Paul Kidston & Simon Taylor: Paul and Simon discuss how better planning makes better projects.

Paul Kidston is the head of project control for Taylor Woodrow, civil engineering division of Vinci Construction, part of the largest construction and concession groups in the world. Working into the role of project management, Paul introduced, then, the relatively unknown technique of earned value analysis. At the same time he started to attend and then regularly became a speaker at EVA events.

Simon Taylor is head of planning at HS2 Ltd and has also worked for Transport for London.

Bruno Kahne: Bruno discusses how deaf people have over developed specific behaviours which help them to communicate faster than those that can hear, and with much more precision. What are these behaviours which allow them to have a more simple, precise and rapid communication?

Dr. Bruno Paul Kahne is the author of “Deaf-Tips, powerful communication.” Bruno leads a team of consultants, trainers, facilitators and coaches who are experts in human performance.

Bruno’s current role is a ‘Head of Disruptive Innovation,’ at Airbus Group Leadership University.  He has managed projects and trained in many parts of the world: Bangladesh, Belgium, Bhutan, China, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Senegal, Spain, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UAE, UK and USA, to list only a few.

Mia Nordberg: Mia explores howe evolution of technology has changed the way you work with others on projects. Have trends of these new advancements improved your productivity, as well as your teams, or have they created new challenges?

Mia Nordborg is Director of the Customer Experience for Projectplace at Planview. Projectplace creates collaborative tools that enable people and organisations to reach their goals.

Dr Sylvana Storey: Sylvana discusses focusing on the behaviours required of leaders to facilitate a change towards inclusive cultures in their organisations. Also presenting LEAD3 , a leading analytical tool for integrated change management.

Sylvana is an organisational change management consultant and a business psychologist. She is the managing director of global organisational integrators and advises organisations. Sylvana is also a guest lecturer for several business schools.

Robin Yeman: One of the mistakes project teams make is the assumption that agile is only utilized for software development. Robin outlines how to set up an integrated performance management baseline for agile programs.

Robin is the agile transformation lead for Lockhead Martin where she has spent 22 years. She holds many certificates to her name including PMI-ACP (program management agile professional), and in the last 13 years has worked in a number of varied roles.

Jake Holloway: Jake shares some of his experiences as a survivor of a hundred or so IT and business projects. This talk is loosely based around his upcoming book, “A Practical Guide to Dealing with Difficult Stakeholders”, he introduces some of the characters that populate real organisations.

Jake Holloway is the Client Director for Xceed Group, specialising in IT transformations, migrations and change.

Simon Springate: Simon discusses how every board needs programme management expertise.

Simon is head of project controls Europe at CH2M. He has over 35 years experience in project controls after specialising in project planning. Throughout his career he has supported the development of the project profession through active membership of the APM and their special interest groups.

Jonathan Crone: Jonathan discuss the HS2 design vision. Developed with the input of leading UK designers, it aims to ensure that all aspects of HS2 will add up to create one transformational experience and that design is used effectively to achieve the ambitious social, economic and environmental goals for the nation. There are three major themes in the HS2 design vision on people, place and time. The full vision can be found on the HS2: high speed rail site.

Jonathan is the Director of the programme management office for HS2 and has over 30 years experience in project delivery. Jon has held project-focussed and functional roles on major projects in the UK and overseas, including major airports.

Julia Forte & Donna Anderson: This presentation takes a brief look at some of the key events that have led to the clinical trial governance (good clinical practice) that we see in place today, ensuring protection of the rights, well-being and health of patients involved. This is in reflection following the WW2 Nuremberg Trials and the use of Thalidomide in the 1950’s.

Julia Forte is the associate director of project management at Quintiles and Donna Anderson is the director of project management.

Eddie Obeng: Eddie displays a memorable aperitif to round off the EVA20 banquet. Eddie leads the audience on an engaging quest for the project management holy grail of success.

Professor Obeng is a British educator who is recognised for his success as a motivational speaker, innovator and author. Eddie has established QUBE, the worlds best 3D learning environment and is a professor at the School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Henley Business School. He is also a contributor to the ever popular and informative TED talks.
